Where Does the Name Lipotropic Injections Come From?
Lipotropic injections take their name from rat liver.
In the 1930s and 1940s, nutrition researchers found that animals fed diets lacking choline accumulated fat in the liver, and that adding choline back reversed it. Substances that did this were called lipotropic, meaning they moved fat.
Methionine did something similar. Inositol turned up in the same series of experiments.
That is the entire origin of the MIC combination. Three substances that turned up in the same body of work on choline-deficient rodent liver, and nothing published since has tied them together more tightly than that.
Zeisel and Blusztajn reviewed the choline literature and the biochemistry holds up. Choline deficiency does produce hepatic fat accumulation, and the mechanism is understood.
What does not follow is anything about a person or an animal who is not choline-deficient.
A deficiency correction is a claim about a deficient system. Extending it to a replete one is a different claim entirely and it was never what the original work showed.
I think this is the single most useful thing a research page can say about this category, and no competitor listing says it.
What Is Actually in the Vial?
Lipotropic injections carry three components in the classical formulation, usually four in practice.
Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid. In the body it is converted to S-adenosylmethionine, the main methyl donor, and methyl groups are what phosphatidylcholine synthesis needs.
Choline is a quaternary ammonium compound and a direct precursor of phosphatidylcholine. Its permanent charge affects how it behaves in solution.
Inositol is a six-carbon ring with six hydroxyl groups, structurally a sugar alcohol, and part of the phosphoinositide signalling system.
Cyanocobalamin is added to most commercial blends. It is the reason a lipotropic vial is usually pink or red, and it is photosensitive enough that light protection is a real requirement rather than a precaution.

Can Anything Be Attributed to One Component?

Nobody does that, which means the published record on lipotropic blends is almost entirely about blends rather than about mechanisms.

There is a version of this that is defensible. If the question is about the mixture as an article, then the mixture is the correct thing to study and attribution to components is beside the point.

A document listing three or four ingredient names with no quantities has described a recipe rather than an article, and that describes most of the paperwork in this category.

What Do Lipotropic Injections Cost to Verify?
More than most articles in this catalogue, because there are four things to verify instead of one.
Each component needs its own identity confirmation and its own quantitation.
None of those methods is difficult, and that is what makes their absence a choice rather than a limitation. Methionine runs on amino acid analysis, choline and inositol on ion chromatography or mass spectrometry, and cyanocobalamin has a strong absorbance that makes it the easiest of the four.
The cost is incentive. A compounding pharmacy producing small batches has little reason to run four assays on every one, and most of them do not.

The most likely explanation is the one that fits the commercial history: B12 injections were already a familiar category, and adding a component with a visible colour and a recognisable name to a colourless mixture is good for a product without being good for a hypothesis.
That is my reading rather than a documented account, and I would hold it loosely.
Without speculation: B12 gives the blend its only unambiguous analytical handle. If a certificate quantifies anything on a lipotropic preparation, it will be the cyanocobalamin, because it is the easy one.
A quantified B12 figure alongside three unquantified components is a document that looks more informative than it is.
One more note on colour, because it has a practical use.
A blend containing cyanocobalamin should be pink or red. If a vial described as containing B12 arrives pale, something is wrong with either the content or the storage history, and it is visible before any instrument is involved.
That is the only visual check available on lipotropic injections, and it takes no equipment at all. Use it every time a vial arrives and again before each entry.
It does not work in reverse. A vial that looks right can still be wrong about the other three components, since none of them is coloured.
How Should the Vial Be Handled?
Refrigerate lipotropic injections and keep them dark. The B12 is the reason and it degrades under light faster than most people expect.
Amber glass or a foil wrap earns its keep even over short storage periods.
Do not freeze. This is a solution rather than a lyophilised solid, and freezing a multi-component solution concentrates the components differentially in the shrinking liquid phase.
Swab the stopper before each entry and use a fresh needle every time, since a preserved vial holds growth in check rather than eliminating it.
Write the date of first entry on the vial.
Inspect before each use. A precipitate in a multi-component solution means the composition in the liquid phase has changed, and the remaining solution is no longer what the label describes.
Record the lot, the quantitative composition as supplied, the compounding date, the first-entry date and the storage temperature.
Quantitative composition belongs in that record rather than the blend name, for the same reason that a peptide record needs a sequence.

I have been fairly hard on the category name through this page, and the components themselves are unobjectionable. Methionine, choline and inositol are real molecules with real biochemistry, and B12 is a vitamin.
The objection is to a name doing work the contents cannot support, and to certificates that describe a recipe.
A researcher who wants to study this mixture as a mixture can do that properly, with a quantified composition and a design that handles it as one article. That is a reasonable piece of work and nothing on this page argues against it.
