BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-residue peptide modelled on part of a protein found in human gastric juice, and it has been described as stable in that juice. What is in each capsule
Each capsule is a hard gelatin shell filled with BPC-157 blended into microcrystalline cellulose as a filler. The safety data sheet lists no other ingredient and classifies none of the three as hazardous. The label claim on the certificate is 60 capsules of 500 mcg, 30 mg of peptide per bottle; at the theoretical mass of 1419.6 Da, 500 mcg is about 0.35 µmol.
Spreading half a milligram of peptide evenly through the filler is the step where a powder blend can go wrong. A 2021 review of tablet manufacture described how blends segregate during transfer, hopper discharge and die filling, and why content uniformity is treated as a critical quality attribute1. The certificate for this lot reports purity, identity by LC-MS, water, endotoxin and sterility. Keep the bottle tightly closed at room temperature, dry and away from light.
What the research covers
The case for studying BPC-157 by mouth rests on its source. Sikiric’s group in Zagreb, which has produced much of the BPC-157 literature, described the peptide as stable in human gastric juice and reported effects on lesions along the digestive tract of rats, from the oesophagus and stomach to the liver and pancreas, with particular attention to injury from alcohol and NSAIDs2. In a 2018 review, Seiwerth and colleagues from the same group wrote that BPC-157, unlike EGF, FGF or VEGF, was consistently effective in all their models of acute and chronic gut injury, whether it reached the animals by mouth, into the abdominal cavity or locally3.
Two limits apply. These are rat studies, most of them from one laboratory, and the oral results are summarised in reviews by the authors who ran the experiments. A 2019 review by authors outside that group called the BPC-157 record consistently positive but based mostly on small rodents, without confirmed efficacy in humans and with only a handful of groups working on the peptide4. Nor did any cited study use capsules or a cellulose blend, so how much peptide a capsule releases, and in what condition, is not something these papers address. Frequently asked questions
Why is BPC-157 offered as capsules when most peptides are not?
Because of where its sequence comes from. BPC-157 is based on a protein in human gastric juice and has been described as stable there, and the main research group included oral delivery in its rat studies. No study has tested these capsules specifically.
How do the capsules differ from the BPC-157 vials?
The vials hold freeze-dried peptide with nothing added, stored at −20 °C and dissolved in the lab. The capsules hold 500 mcg each in a cellulose filler, are kept at room temperature, and are not made to be reconstituted.
